Treatment Planning for Dental Implants

The treatment planning for Implants follows the same general format whether the case is a single Implant or Multiple Implants.

Treatment Planning is the most important part of the treatment. It allows up to investigate any potential complications, it also allows us to understand the patients needs. It is also very common for us to find that the need for Dental Implants is just one of many dental needs that the patient requires.

We will only undertake Dental Implant Treatment where we feel that we can meet the patients expectations and just as importantly, that the patient will be able to maintain good dental Health afterwards.

We strongly suggest that patients research Dental Implants before their appointment, and we offer a few leaflets with some useful information. (see below)

Stages in the implant process?

From Start to finish the dental implant process normally involves several stages that take place over a period of time from three to twelve months. There are various implant methods such as placing implants at the time the tooth root is extracted or even placing the implant and restoring it with a tooth on the same day.

The five stages are:

Assessment and Planning
Implant Placement Procedure
Integration Phase
The Restorative Procedure
Maintenance

Assessment and Planning

We will start off by completing

A full Dental Health History
A full Dental Examination

We will always need x-rays (patients will often have them already)

We will usually take pictures and Study Models

If there are other dental problems then we will give you a separate treatment plan for these as well.

We will then have a discussion about the various options including non implant option and we have a number of leaflets that we give to patients; We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the treatment options as well as posible complications, so that the patient can make an inform decision.

We will then give you a written treatment plan with costing's and time frames.

We will then encourage the patient to ask as many questions as they need to.

We like patients to feel that they are under no pressure to agree to treatment so we always suggest at this stage that the patient to go away and think about what they want to do. If the patients agrees, we then make another appointment when the discussion continues and a treatment plan is agreed.

The way forward for the Treatment may be to proceed with the treatment, defer the treatment, or continue to think about it.

Implant Placement Procedure

This is generally a simple procedure that is performed under sterile conditions in a dental surgery usualy using local anaesthesia.

We do offer the option of sedation as well.

We may use some of the bone saved from the drilling procedure and some artificial bone and a membrane to augment the proper contour of the ridge and gum around the implant.

Integration Period Phase

Some Dental implants can be loaded into function immediately or quite soon after surgery.

However in most cases a period of three to six months should be allowed for the implant to fully integrate and fuse with the supporting bone.

The patients own denture or in some cases a simple adhesive bridge can be worn during the healing phase.

The Restorative Procedure

Once the Dental Implant has integrated we will connect a healing abutment to connect the implant to the gum.

A couple of weeks later We then take impressions so that the restoration can be constructed

The restoration is constructed by a specialist dental laboratory.

Maintenance

After the restoration is placed, patients will be advised on cleaning thoroughly around the implants.

We will then give the patient a a programme to maintain the integrity of the implant and restoration.

Our Implant team

We have 5 Implant surgeons, Dr Jaime De Castro Torres, Dr Iyad Abou-Rabii, Dr Álvaro De Castro Torres, Dr Aaron Lopez and Dr Ezgi Cilingir

The team has, between them, many years of experience in both the straight forward and the more complex implant cases including full mouth reconstructions

The team has a wide experience of the simple and complex case and carries out all the procedures including any preliminary work like Sinus lifts and other Oral Surgery Procedures.

The team between them has placed considerably more than 2000 implants and continue to place 100's of implants a year

At least one member of the team is available EVERY day of the week. <

Your First Visit to our Practice For General Check-Up

We want you first visit, and every visit to be a great experience.

Most of our new patients come to us for a check up but some come to use our Emergency Dental Service.

On your first Visit we give you a practice leaflet and an explanation leaflet about your first visit (what will happen and the charges)

We ask you to fill in a confidential medical questionnaire and a consent form where you acknowledge that you will be treated as a private patient. If you want to download the medical history before you arrive (saves time!!) then please Download the medical History Form

You are then taken to a treatment room where the dentist and dental nurse introduce themselves. We take a dental history and carry out an examination and perhaps take a radiograph and sometimes use an intra oral camera.

We make use of the latest computer graphics and have a fantastic dental program which can illustrate treatment options. It can also help to how the various dental diseases like gum disease effect the tissues.

We then discuss with you our findings and discuss the various options for treatment, these are all documented on a written itemised treatment plan which patients can take home.

At all stages the patient in involved and we encourage them to ask as many questions as they wish.

Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer is very common and the number of cases is increasing all the time, especially among the 20 to 40 years old.

Our Screening takes 3 main parts

1. Discussion of the Risk Factors. For example Smoking (including some recreations drugs), alcohol and certain adult recreational habits.

2. A discussion about any untoward changes in and around the mouth and upper throat (swellings, ulcers, swallowing, patches .....)

3. Examination of soft and hard tissues. This included the part where we examine the tongue and back of the mouth. It can be a little uncomfortable but is an essential part of the examination as these are the two main sites for Mouth Cancers.0

All our dentists are trained to carry out a cancer Screen and we take this very seriously.

Last year (2013) we identified more cases that turned out to be possitive than we did in the previous 5 years.
